2024 MONDAY BIKE RIDES
Led by Peggy Kvam for the Hopkins Activity Center
I enjoyed this article from the New York Times, "My Mother Got on a Bike. It Changed Her Life", so am sharing it with you. Biking is really good for us! And fun!

You can now sign up here for the 2024 season of the Hopkins Bike Club! The cost is $10 for Hopkins Activity Center members/$12 for non-members. Once you have paid the one-time fee, you will be able to sign up for the ride each week. We are capping registration at 18, plus leader Peggy. Please contact the Hopkins Activity Center during business hours Monday-Thursday if you need to cancel any date's registration, to open the slot for another biker.
The signup link for each date's ride is posted on my Calendar page. Our first meeting is the Kickoff event on Wednesday, May 1 at 5:30 PM, followed by a 19 mile ride with a stop for a bite to eat. Our 2024 bike ride schedule is now posted on the Calendar tab. Our season runs from May 1st through August 26th. The rides are similar to last year, with some route changes. Of course, if there is a construction detour or some weather event to work around, routes and our schedule may change. Remember to register for each week's ride at the Hopkins Activity Center.
I will lead our bike rides at a 12 mph average pace, typically 25-35 miles long. All but two rides will start at Maetzold Field at 9AM each Monday. Our first exception is the Kickoff ride, with the informational session beginning at 5:30 PM on Wednesday, May 1st at Maetzold Field. This will be followed by a ride around the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes, including a dinner stop at the Pimento Jamaican Kitchen in the new Bde Maka Ska pavilion. The other exception is our next to the last ride on August 19, which is our longest ride and starts at Shady Oak Beach. The ride takes us on a big loop through the Minnesota River Valley, from the Bloomington Ferry Bridge to the Chaska Bridge. Watch this page for announcements and weekly photos and ride reports! If there are any changes to the ride schedule, particularly last minute weather concerns, I will email those on the registration list. Welcome back to the 2024 Hopkins Bike Club, Monday Active Rides! Peggy Kvam I've pulled together pictures from our 2023 bike rides into one big slide show. Enjoy the memories!
I'm planning to continue these rides next year, and hope to see you all again! Peggy We enjoyed one last sunny summer morning of biking, with a ride across eight bridges on the Mississippi River. It was fun, although a little crowded, biking through campus and taking in the ambiance at the Washington Bridge plaza. The Shoe Tree is a hoot! The Stone Arch Bridge will be closed for the next two summers, so this ride will not be repeated before 2026! Thanks for biking with me, everyone! The Hopkins Bike Club was great fun, and I plan to lead it again next year. Our 2024 season will just run from May through August, due to my travel plans in September. Our Fall Leaf ride was more focused on navigating the slippery wet leaves on the ground, rather than gazing at the color in the trees, but we all had a great time. We lost the race against the rain moving in, with heavy drizzle upon us the last miles. There was some tree foliage color, and abundant acorns (and squirrels). Thanks for biking with me this season, everyone! This was our last scheduled ride. We are planning a make-up date to bike my Mississippi Bridges ride next Monday. It's on the Hopkins recreation calendar so you can sign up, and be on the list for any emailed messages about weather concerns. Signup is not required, however. The group size has dwindled so I don't expect a crowd. Once again we enjoyed perfect weather for today's ride. The theme today was Nine Mile Creek. We biked the trail along the creek and saw a few projects that perform stormwater management and water quality improvement, developed by the Nine Mile Creek Watershed District. Janna Keiffer, our consulting engineer from Barr Engineering, met us at Rosland Park to explain the filtration vault, which filters out the over-abundant phosphorus from Lake Cornelia. Then we biked past Lynmar Basin, which takes in stormwater from the Southdale area and guides it to percolate through the earth to recharge groundwater. Our long break was at Centennial Lakes, which is similar to Lynmar Basin, also taking in stormwater but releasing it slowly into the creek rather than infiltrating it into the earth. Following our educational bike ride, we celebrated a grand summer of biking with a potluck picnic. I forgot to take pictures there, but you can enjoy the ones below from our bike ride. Today's ride around Medicine Lake was perfect! Great weather, beautiful scenery and some fun stops along the way. The hot days are finally behind us, I think. We only had five today, so I hope the turnout is better next week for our bike ride and year-end picnic! Next week I will take all registrations, including the wait list. Enjoy today's photos! Peggy We had amazing weather for our ride to Lake Minnewashta! I know it felt like alot of uphill climbs on our ride there, but we had some fun downhill runs on our return. The lake trails lead us to a picnic area which was really pleasant for our break. We also stopped for water refills and a quick picture at Excelsior Commons, which has completed a very nice plaza in the park to put our feet up for a bit. We caught a lucky break in this week's heat wave this morning, and had a lovely morning biking around the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes. The magnificent homes are as interesting to view as the lakes! Photos were taken at Lake Bde Maka Ska, Lake Harriet, Lake of the Isles and Cedar Lake. There was also a special photo stop just 3 blocks into our ride at the new community street art project, the Hopkins Ladybug. It's really big! I hope Hopkins has fun with this idea and adds more art to their charming town streets. |
